I will say the antenna looks well built and the quality appears good out of the packaging. I bought several configurations of this antenna. I cannot recommend this enough for portable or if you have restrictive space at your QTH.Įasily falls over and breaks everytime it falls So when I am portable I have something for every band. I love this antenna so much I purchased another this time the long version. I guyed mine on windy days and all was fine up to about 15-20MPH. to make tuning on 40 easier I then ordered up the long whips and the TRSB (which is amazing). It worked so well I then purchased the low band coil for 80m and the counterpoise and this for a compromised antenna worked extremely well. Easy to set up and figure out (antenna analyser makes it easier I used a NanoVNA) Worked 40,20,10 and 2m no problem at all, although you get a rough setup guide on where to start and the forums are amazing with help and support, I soon came up with my own settings for the off-centre dipole and vertical configurations. Setup portable on a hill and worked the world. I took the plunge and ordered up my deluxe package from Martyn lynch. I love going portable and I was always looking for an antenna I could use but also enjoy setting up and experiment with. Simple, well built stable portable antenna A bit pricey, but if it works as well as it has so far at the house, it will be worth the price to me. I've used it several times from the house.just haven't taken it camping.yet. No issue with it falling over.even on the windy days I tested it. In this configuration, the antenna and mast is "rock solid". I set it up on a real windy day.and my technique, is to put out the guy ropes and get them close to right.then I lower the mast and make final antenna adjustments, then raise the mast back up until it's ALMOST fully extended.but has made the guy rope lines quite tight. I can move it to any open place in a campsite.and even change orientation of the dipole in a flash. The quality of the build is good and like how I can set it up anywhere with the tripod and guy ropes. I will only use the shorter whips that came with it for 2 meters. I get all of 20 well under 2:1, and the other bands also get all of the bands with low (usually under 1.5:1) SWR. I get a good bit of 40 under 2:1 (and I can tune ALL of 40 with my internal tuner on the FT991A). I used a Rigexpert antenna analyzer to set up initially and confirm tap settings and whip lengths. I later bought extra "taps" for the coil.and now have EVERY band preset so all I have to do is lower and move the wire to the right tap and change (if necessary) the whip length(s) to change bands. Almost every setting was exactly what their setup chart said it would be.with just a few needing "tweaking" (one band I set the black side coil one turn more and one band I set the whip to full instead of 5.5). Obtaining resonance with the longer whips. I was S9 with my 100 watts and buddipole set up at about 19 feet high. I wanted to see not only how strong my signal was with the new portable antenna, but also how my camping portable rig (Yaesu FT991A) sounded to them. My second contact was also on 40, with some friends on the East Coast that knew me. My first contact was on 40 after I set it up.worked E7DX on CW on 40. I've set it up in my yard (haven't gone camping since buying it). Good luck - I'm sure there are many that will have great successes with the "Buddipole". I will say that I did like the tripod very much and the guy wires - very nice design. And the banana plugs really are not the way to go. Both myself and my son believe there are much better options out there for the money shop around. I think that most of the reviews must be on 20 meters as I was able to tune the antenna well however, tuning did not come easy and the configurations provided in the directions were not even close for me. I gave the antenna to my son - same problem on 10 meters. I called Buddipole only to receive a short curt response - something to the effect of they are in the process of moving and don't have time to talk. Using a MFJ-259B, I seldom managed to get the SWR below 4. I've tried several configurations without success on 10 meter. I purchased this antenna based upon the great reviews of eHam. This time around, Humberto Mendoza Garcilazo, a researcher at the Center of Scientific Research and Higher Education in Ensenada, said supersonic airplanes may have been responsible for the “rumble.” But he also suggested it could have come from the day’s stormy weather and drastic changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure.īrandt Maxwell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego, was skeptical about ties to the weather. “Usually you don’t hear the side booms travel that far. “Those two aircraft went supersonic about 35 miles from the coast,” a Navy spokesman said at the time. In 2012, when a similar boom rattled windows and doors along the coastline, initial “not us” denials from the military gave way to an admission: The pilots in two Navy F/A-18 aircraft had been showing off for guests aboard the carrier Carl Vinson during a family cruise. Defense contractors testing some kind of newfangled weapon? Mum was the word there too, as it usually is with classified military projects. The Marines? They didn’t respond to a request for comment. Zachary Harrell, a Navy spokesman, who noted that planes breaking the sound barrier are required to do it far off the coast. This being San Diego, longtime home to military jets, a lot of folks thought “sonic boom” too. Its seismic activity sensors recorded nothing. No satisfactory theory has ever been broached to explain these noises.”Īfter Wednesday’s boom here, the first thought of many people - this being California - was “earthquake.” But the United States Geological Survey said no. The lake seems to be speaking to the surrounding hills, which send back the echoes of its voice in accurate reply. “The report is deep, hollow, distant and imposing. “It is a sound resembling the explosion of a heavy piece of artillery that can be accounted for by none of the known laws of nature,” he wrote. On the East Coast, enigmatic booms are known as “Seneca Guns,” the name drawn from a lake in upstate New York that was the setting for an 1850 short story, “The Lake Gun,” by James Fenimore Cooper. But unexplained loud, shaking noises are the most common, sometimes falling under the general term “skyquakes.” Thirty years ago, thousands of San Diegans were drawn to what some believed was the apparition of a slain girl on a blank billboard in Chula Vista. “Mysterious Shaking Rattles San Diego County AGAIN,” the website Strange Sounds trumpeted in a headline this week. They are constructed when it is necessary for pedestrians to cross a railway line or a dual carriageway such as an interstate highway, and they appear at the exits from underground rapid transit systems, but one would be rarely built to enable people to cross an ordinary city street. Subways are less common in North American cities than in European cities of comparable size. In 's-Hertogenbosch, the urban ring road has only one level crossing, but has ten overpasses and fourteen underpasses to ensure the road does not form a barrier to cyclists and pedestrians. To reduce delays, new separate underpasses were built, with motor traffic given a longer route than active travel modes. At Bilthoven station, the cycle track and major road previously crossed the railway at grade. In the Netherlands, underpasses for cyclists and pedestrians are often built as part of bikeways, often to replace level crossings or at-grade cyclist/pedestrian crossings. To reduce conflict with the grid system vehicle traffic (which normally has high speeds), redways normally run underneath grid roads. In Milton Keynes, a new town in the UK, alongside the grid of expressways are a system of shared-use paths known as redways. Subways are characteristic of European post-war suburbs and new towns. A subway under the A38 in Birmingham city centre was criticised for having a ramp on one side but only stairs on the other side. As the underpass is normally below the level of the footway and carriageway (rather than the carriageway being lifted over the road), technologies such as stairs, lifts and ramps must be used. īadly designed subways may not provide for disabled users, especially those in a wheelchair who cannot use stairs. Pedestrians will not use an underpass where a more direct at-grade option is available. However, they are normally considered a last resort by modern urban planners as they can be expensive and cause graffiti and security issues. Pedestrian underpasses allow for the uninterrupted flow of both pedestrians and vehicle traffic. This usage also occurs in Scotland, where the underground railway in Glasgow is referred to as the Glasgow Subway. Where they are built elsewhere in the country, the term 'pedestrian underpass' is more likely to be used, because "subway" in North America refers to rapid transit systems such as the New York City Subway or the Toronto Subway. In the United States, as used by the California Department of Transportation and in parts of Pennsylvania such as Harrisburg, Duncannon and Wyoming County, subway refers to a depressed road undercrossing. The 'Public Subway' sign at this transit system entrance refers to the pedestrian subways underneath the junction, not to the London Underground. Which is something you should be thankful for you don’t want to be too close to something like that…especially since, in a few million years or so, it’ll explode as a supernova. Only one star in a thousand is as massive, hot, and bright as it is. Mind you, that whole glowing gas cloud is something like five light year across-50 trillion kilometers (30 trillion miles)! But HD 34989 is a monster. It’s hard to believe all that is lit by a single star, but it is. This is very similar to what lights up the Orion Nebula and other famous (and gorgeous) objects. The edge of it is being lit by the star, making it look brighter. See that sharp ridge of red at the bottom left of the nebula, right where we start to see blue light? That’s probably the edge of a large, dense cloud of dust called a molecular cloud (those are common in that part of space). Interestingly, not all the dust in that cloud is scattering the star’s light. You can see why astronomers use these filters it helps distinguish what’s physically happening in the nebula. On Flickr I found a nice set of images showing how the reflected and emitted light can be combined to make a single image like Adam’s. Not always, but that’s clearly the case here in fact they have two different names: vdB38 for the reflection nebula and Sharpless 2-236 for the emission nebula. Many times where you see a blue reflection nebula you also see red emission gas as well. The star is blue, so it makes the dust look blue. When the light from the star hits it, that light gets scattered every which way, and some of it heads toward us. It’s strewn throughout the galaxy, especially where you see big gas clouds. It’s just the blue light of the star reflected! In this case, the culprit isn’t gas, it’s dust-thick clumps of complex molecules created when stars are born, and when they die. So where does the blue come from then? That one’s easier. In this case, the cloud is called an emission nebula. There is a special Hα filter astronomers use to specifically observe that light, which Adam used in this picture to enhance the glowing hydrogen. So in this case the gas is energized by the star, and responds by emitting that glorious red color. It’s very common in warm gas clouds where some bright star is nearby. This emission is called hydrogen-alpha, or H-alpha for short (or even Hα if you want to get all fancy and Greek). When an electron makes that drop, it emits a photon (a particle of light) in the red part of the spectrum. Every time it does that, it gives off a little bit of light.Īs it happens, one of those energy level jumps is very popular among the excited hydrogen atoms. Due to complicated quantum mechanic effects, the electron jumps down a series of discrete energy levels, a bit like a ball rolling down a staircase. If one meets up with it, they combine once again to form a neutral atom. But then the remaining atom (really just a proton) has a positive charge, and attracts any electron around it. When an atom of hydrogen gets zapped with UV, the electron gets blown off the atom. The gas cloud has a lot of hydrogen in it, which loves to absorb that UV light. In fact, it gives off a lot of ultraviolet light. The star HD 34989 is emitting light, and that light is very blue. One is if it reflects light from a nearby source (which is how we see the vast majority of objects around us), and the other is if it is intrinsically giving off, or emitting, light. There are two ways for an object to be visible. The gas and dust are obvious, too…but what’s the deal with those colors? Why is some of the gas red, and some blue? HD 34989 is pretty obvious it’s the intensely bright star in the middle. Adam took this picture with the 0.8 meter (32 inch) Schulman Telescope (RCOS) on Mt. Here’s where you’re going to want to close your eyes for a second. I’d take this weight over something lightweight any day. It’s easily one of the heaviest beard trimmers and bald head shavers I’ve tested, but it’s something that makes the unit feel unbreakable and well-made. The Bevel Pro also has some weight to it. There’s no way these guards will ever fall off accidentally during your shave. I’m not sure what Bevel put into this magnet, but it’s compatible with Gorilla Glue. Fortunately, that isn’t the case whatsoever with the Bevel Pro. It’s an innovative design that worried me at first I was worried the heads would keep falling off as I shaved. Why does that matter? Because all of the included heads (#0, #1, #2, #3 and #4 guards) hold on magnetically. It’s designed with a heavy-duty metal that’s totally magnetic. Length is displayed via an LED display above the buttons, where users can choose between 0.0-2.5mm in 0.1mm increments to see exactly where their clipper head is at.Īt the very top is where you’ll find the buzzer. Adjusting the blade is almost like adjusting an electronic side mirror on your car. On the front, there are two buttons toward the head that allow the blade to move up or down depending on your desired closeness to the clipper. The device has an elongated ovular shape with a subtle lined pattern across the exterior, which allows it to stand on its side without rolling over. It almost feels like a blueprint for what all buzzers should look like from here on out. It’s so futuristic in detail that it feels way ahead of its time. Visually speaking, the Bevel Pro looks like a trimmer that should exist in the year 2056.
